Sewer Scope Inspections

Sewer scope inspections involve sending a lighted camera attached to a long cable through the sewer line to look for any current or developing defects.

Sewer scope inspections are an innovative solution to an old problem. For as long as we have been using enclosed sewer lines we have also had the problem of needing to occasionally troubleshoot and repair those sewer pipes. In the past, that may have meant snaking, augering, or jetting a sewer line “blind” in hopes of clearing any obstructions - or digging up the sewer line to identify and repair any problems.

Today, we have an easier and more affordable option for inspecting sewer lines and determining what, if any, problems are present. Sewer scope inspections involve visually inspecting the inside of sewer pipes from the building to the municipal sewer or septic system connection. A sewer scope inspection is performed using a special pipe camera system with a waterproof camera fitted to the end of a long cable. The camera head is surrounded by bright LEDs that illuminate the sewer pipes, and is connected to a video monitor that is capable of recording videos and photos during the inspection.

Why Have a Sewer Scope Inspection?

There are a several reasons why you may have a sewer scope inspection performed on your home or commercial property. These include sewer performance problems, maintenance inspections, and pre-purchase/buyer inspections.

One reason to have a sewer scope inspection performed at your home or business is to identify potential problems with the sewer line. Slow, gurgling, or smelly drains may be the result of a damaged sewer line that is slowing or blocking solid and liquid waste from making its way to the municipal sewer or septic system. Sewage backing up into lower-level drains is also an indication of problems with the sewer line.

Another reason to have a sewer scope inspection performed is to check on known problems with the sewer line. Property owners who have had trouble in the past with tree root intrusion or other problems with their sewer line may schedule periodic maintenance inspections to monitor the condition of the sewer line.

Sewer scope inspections are also frequently performed as part of a home or commercial property inspection. Sewer line repairs typically cost thousands of dollars. Having a sewer scope inspection performed prior to purchasing a home or business property allows you to know if there are expensive problems buried underground in the sewer line.

Common Sewer Line Problems

Some common defects identified during sewer scope inspections.

What problems might be discovered during a sewer scope inspection? Some of the more common sewer line problems include:

  • Root Intrusion
  • Excessive Rust/Scaling
  • Debris Blockage
  • Pipe Damage
  • Offset Pipe Joints
  • Bellies (Low Spots)
  • Grease Build-Up

A sewer scope inspection is a non-invasive, visual inspection of the interior of a sewer line. Sewer scope inspections are quick, inexpensive, and do not require digging up the sewer line. Considering the cost of sewer line repairs, a sewer scope inspection is a great investment in your home or commercial property.
